I had never used uShip, but it turned up when I googled "horse shipping." I was extremely nervous about using it, but I was desperate. My mare needed to go to northern New York to be bred, but here in New Jersey, my usual shipper was not available. I hate to rely on strangers. I put my request on uShip, thinking that I could always refuse to contact anyone who didn't sound good, and since they wouldn't know my name or address, they couldn't harrass me with sales calls.
Those of you who own horses will know -- the mares must get to the stallions in the spring or summer. They only come in heat once a month, and they are only fertile for a few hours on one particular day! So there are few chances to breed. If I couldn't get Marilyn, my grey Percheron, to the stallion soon, I would have to wait an entire year to breed her.
Immediately, five offers came in from uShip shippers. That alone was impressive as there are not that many people who ship horses. I think having access to a site like uShip gave private individuals the chance to let owners know about their service. Otherwise, we only know about the big companies who have big advertising budgets.
After replying to three of the shippers, I chose Eddy (Kellett -- twostars horse transportation), just by intuition that he seemed like a real horse man. None of the responders were good typists, but that's not necessary! I wanted someone who cared about horses and drove safely.
Eddy kept in contact with me. He showed up at the farm on time -- EXACTLY when he said he would, which caught me off guard because the other shippers I've used had always been at least an hour late, and usually several hours late.
When I brought Marilyn up, he helped me put on her halter, then spoke to her and stroked her gently. She trusted him immediately.
He had offered me the large box stall on his van. But when he saw her, he suggested putting her in the smaller stall so she could keep her footing easily. It was the perfect solution.
