We had an odd request, as our requests go: move an equipped, functional full-size fire engine from the San Francisco area to Las Vegas for use as a convention prop, and back again. (We own a fleet of fire vehicles that are rented out for promotions, movie/TV props, and heck, sometimes even put out fires.)
The coordination of this event was a feat in itself, but the timelines we were given by the convention coordinator to deliver was aggressive: we needed to source a carrier, make transit arrangements, and be on the road in a matter of a few days. I looked to uShip.com for that, after finding the usual "Google" search results found lots of brokers and promises, but few who could deliver.
But Bob could, and did. Bob at Duff Transportation bid on the project at the target price we posted on the site. I accepted his bid soon after, and even before I could contact him, he had recognized time was of the essence, and called me to work out the details.
The story ending there would have already left me a happy guy, but a particularly nasty storm hit the Northern California area the weekend Bob and his crew were due to hit the highway. He was already watching the weather, and got on the horn to give me the head's up as to how this would affect our time-sensitive shipment.
Not one to call it quits because of a little rain (and snow and power outages and flooding), the transport arrived in my yard at a time we decided upon to meet my customer's needs, worked around the weather, and could still get the fire truck on the road and to Lass Vegas without compromising safety or old fashioned common sense.
The truck arrived back at home 90 minute ago, at 5:30am on this Sunday morning -- a full day before I had expected it would be here. Despite the early hour, the driver was upbeat and pleasant, unloaded the truck and was on the way with a handshake and a wave.
While we typically drive our trucks to events, when we next need a transport, Bob is our new go-to guy.
