My husband died of cancer in 1991. As a single mom i raised two girls alone, launching them into college. Three years ago, limited time and finances forced the sale of my beloved horses, Leona Margaret and Sparky.
I cried buckets of tears but had to put personal pleasure aside and priorities upfront. There weren't any other options. I am not alone on this as many of us come to places in our lives where we have to sacrifice ourself for our children or the family as a whole.
In December 2006, with my daughters well into independent adult lives of their own, I married a wonderful caring man with a loving heart - and a big red barn! Knowing my love for Sparky and Leona, he set about tracking them down, made an offer, secured them at a boarding facility in CA where I used to live, then went thru UShip to bring them home to Michigan for me.
My husband understood it wasn't just owning a horse, it was having these two particular horses that meant so much. They weren't livestock. They cantered thru my thoughts. In their three-year absence i felt their presence, if only in my heart.
We chose McGhee Transporters mostly because they were a 3-generation family owned and operated business. We felt their caring approach and attitude toward our animals from the very beginning.
At the transporters own expense, the journey included a layover of several days where my horses stayed in first class accommodations. I had phone numbers, news of cities and state lines crossed during the trip. Always knowing where they were on this long trek meant a lot.
Sparky and Leona arrived well-cared for and surprisingly relaxed despite the 2,000 plus miles traveled.
Everett and brother Ryan McGhee never knew particulars surrounding this transport, yet still handled my horses with exceptional care. Indeed, it was a special delivery. It wasn't really 2,000 miles traveled. It was a journey from something precious lost to restoration, bringing my beloved Sparky and Leona home to me.
